La peinture de Gartner est d'essence composite et éclectique. Et je serais tenté de dire que cet éclectisme s'apparente bien à la tendance référentielle tous azimuts qui caractérise notre condition post-moderne. Chez Gartner la texture du tableau est riche de matière. Les oeuvres de Gartner, apparaissent comme les pages d'un album de la mémoire. Ce langage codé, nous apparaît pourtant dégager une forte sensation d'intimité. Nous ne connaitrons jamais la totalité de la substance du secret de la vision de Gartner. Mais ce qui me touche profondément c'est la complicité qui nous lie à une image plus ou moins familière et qui nous laisse des traces qui sont autant de points de repaire offerts à notre imagination. Libre à nous de les combiner à notre guise ces éléments épars que l'auteur nous livre en un certain ordre assemblés. Le traitement de la matière témoigne d'un talent riche, précis et sûr. L'impression que je ressens à l'approche de son oeuvre me donne à penser que Gartner est à l'aube d'un nouveau réveil ou plus exactement au bord d'un rêve éveillé dont la motivation profonde serait d'apporter un peu de sérénité dans le chaos du monde. Ce que je ressens très fort devant cette oeuvre, c'est la sincérité. Gartner nous parle avec son coeur et aussi du fond du coeur. Ce qu'il nous livre, ce sont des fragments d'expériences vécues qu'il sait rendre parlant de façon à nous émouvoir et à libérer en nous les tentations de l'imaginaire. Tel est sans doute le secret de cette peinture qui nous dévoile tous les charmes d'un intimisme feutré.

Feverishly Gartner's biography races through the years: studies music, starts composing at the age of fifteen, begins to draw, writes poetry. Travels through Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, visits Woodstock in the right year. Meets Jacques Brel, composes for the Belgian Radio and Television-jazz band. When in Spain discovers Clavé and Tapies, well known abstract painters. Renewed interest for Brazil. Encounters the Indians. Floats down the Amazon. In 1980 Gartner decides to devote himself to the art of painting.With Gartner a window, a door which bump against a red ground of clay, of wax, wherein some broken white glows like an allusion to what lies behind as in a far-away space. Window after window painted layer from the frame on, windows looking out at nothingness. Doors leading nowhere - showing neither bolts nor hinges. They succeed each other in a game of flattened perspective, similar to these Russian dolls which end up in a visual, closed tautology - but with Gartner space starts right here, it forms the heart of his work, a space which in turn swells and reaches out to the outer corners. Almost constantly the canvas vibrates with the same pattern: the shadows of a language floats on fragments of a code reduced to typography: out of the sky he plucks script and numbers.In his studio above the Antwerp central park, he extracts his most typical color from the Milky Way, a creamy waxy white, which shows the limit between window and door, between earthly earth and universe. Endless finitude.

GARTNER:Voorbij de Materie:-----Gartner is op persoonlijke wijze tot de beeldende kunst gekomen:via muziek,vooral jazz,en verre reizen.Brazil,in deze smeltkroes van culturen,maakt bij de jonge Gartner een innerlijke beeldenwereld los,die hij vanaf 1980 picturaal zal uiten.De autochtonen-cultuur,materie en aardskleuren zijn voor hem de basis van een ononderbroken zoektocht.Via een langzaam uitzuiveringsproces en originaliteit,ontwikkelt hij een stijl die "eigen" is en die voortdurend evolueert.De oorsprong van zijn recente schilderijen is verscheiden:vanuit het mysticisme,de poëzie,de mythe,de symboliek van het getal of vanuit de kunstenaar zelf.Met eigen vormen en technieken maakt hij werken die getuigen van authenticiteit en zeggingskracht.De symbolen,de tekens en de abstraktie zijn door elkaar verweven in eindeloze variaties.De schilderijen van Gartner kunnen niet eenduidig worden verklaard.Het vergt tijd om ze te exploreren.Net als bij eminente beoefenaars van de materiekunst staat de "ruimtelijkheid",het fysiche aanvoelen van de schilderijen van Gartner centraal.De picturale produktie van Gartner wordt verder gekenmerkt door een gewilde dualiteit binnen hetzelfde beeld.Enerzijds is er in het verlengde van de informele kunst die aandacht voor het spontane gebaar voor de door het toeval ontstane lijnvoering.Anderzijds is er de kompositorische vaardigheid en de beredeneerde keuze van kleur.Gartner is een schilder in de echte zin van het woord,die het métier van de schilderkunst in zich draagt.Ik kom tot een besluit.Hoezeer Gartner zich ook bezighoudt met de materie:met de verf,met het doek of andere dragers,met extra-picturale elementen die hij toevoegt,altijd weet hij het zuiver materiële te ontstijgen. Altijd bereikt Gartner het stadium van de vergeestelijking.
